OLD SAN JUAN, A PLACE WITH GREAT HISTORY

Puerto Rico is also called “the Island of Enchantment” because it is an oasis in the Caribbean due to its history, beaches and countless natural attractions, such as Old San Juan, in addition to the contagious joy of the Puerto Ricans also known as “boricuas”.

Puerto Rico was one of the first places visited by Columbus, and since his second voyage it became one of the most important Spanish ports in the Caribbean due to its location. But the truth is, Puerto Rico’s charm definitely begins with its capital, San Juan, where the ancient area is simply surprising. Do you remember this song? Well, it perfectly describes the spirit of this place. Old San Juan was founded in 1509 by the Spanish, who quickly built a wall to avoid enemy attacks.

This historic center is a World Heritage Site, and getting to know it is a pleasure. Its streets are simply charming, lively, colorful and very cosmopolitan, showing the framework of its Caribbean atmosphere.

 

A CITY TO WALK

To get to know San Juan, you will discover that walking is the best option. Surrounded by a colonial air with its civic buildings, its churches, and its squares, such as San José, San Juan, Plaza del Quinto Centenario and Plaza de Armas.

Another must-see is definitely San Felipe del Morro Fort, from where you can appreciate incredible ocean views, the bay and the port. If you arrive by cruise, it will be the first view as you arrive.

San Cristobal Castle, San Jeronimo Fort and Santa Elena Fort complement a visit to the historical past of this walled city. Every street, every corner, holds fabulous stories.

In addition, the famous walls are still standing, such as the one of the City Hall, and the Fortress, which is also the residence of Puerto Rico’s government. Another wonder is Puerta de San Juan, the original entrance gate to the city.

If you are fascinated by museums, there are many very interesting ones in San Juan, from the Museum of Art and History to the Pablo Casals Museum, the Indian Museum or the Museum of Our African Roots. As the weather is incredible all year round, walks along Paseo de la Princesa are a great in the afternoons, not to mention the nearby beaches, Liquillos, Carolina or Condado, which you will love.

Of course, Old San Juan offers wonderful cuisine, Creole dishes and seafood with a delicious Caribbean flavor. Try the famous tostones and the delicacies served in the bars. You can’t leave without going to a traditional café and trying the authentic piña coladas from Barrachina, where it is said that this traditional Caribbean cocktail was invented.

In the colonial streets you will find cute souvenir and crafts shops, and after sunset, enjoy the Puerto Rican joy with a very lively nightlife to the rhythm of salsa, bomba and reggaeton.
