THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART (THE MET)
This is the biggest museum in the United States and one of the most important in the world. Its architectural majesty is complemented with the deepness and variety of its collection.
It has an exhibition of over 2 million works of art from all around the world, from Egyptian mummies to Van Gogh paintings, including medieval armors and Asian art. It’s insane.
Of all the museums in New York, this is the one that will take you the longest to explore. There are nice cafés and rooftops so you can take a break in the middle.
MUSEUM OF MODERN ART (MOMA)
Nestled in Midtown, the MoMA is a key institution to understand the evolution of art of the 20th and 21st Century. Its collection constantly redefines the limits of art and you can take a look at works by Picasso, Dalí, Warhol, and Frida Kahlo, among others.
It has an amazing store , and the best of all is that the entrance is free on Fridays from 5:30 to 9:00 pm. Get in line early because there’s usually a lot of people.
AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY
If you’ve seen “Night At The Museum”, you have to go. It’s ideal for families and curious travelers, this museum is a window to the past and to the universe. Its diorama of the blue whale and the dinosaur room are legendary.
Here you’ll see dinosaurs, minerals, world cultures, space, and much more. It is one of the biggest and most complete natural science museums in the world.
Take note: the museum suggests an entrance fee of 28 dollars, but you can pay what you wish if you buy the ticket in person at the box office.
THE WHITNEY MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART
This fabulous museum is in the heart of the famous Meatpacking District, so you can explore this neighborhood as well. If you go shopping in the United States, here are some recommendations.
The museum offers a fresh and thought-provoking take on American art, with stunning views of the High Line and the Hudson River. You’ll find contemporary and modern American art, with a strong focus on living artists.
Take note: On Friday evenings from 6:00 to 10:00 PM, admission is also “pay what you wish.” Of all the museums in New York, this one is truly full of surprises.
THE GUGGENHEIM
A true gem of the Upper East Side. Its architecture is just as impressive as its collection—modern, impressionist, and contemporary art housed in an iconic building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
Its spiral ramp offers a one-of-a-kind way to experience art, and the gift shop is simply amazing. Tip: On Saturdays from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, it also follows the “pay what you wish” model.
