Ixtapa Zihuatanejo: Two Mexican personalities in one destination

by ROYAL HOLIDAY 29 March, 2017
    written by ROYAL HOLIDAY

Sandy beaches awaits in the Mexican Pacific!

When visiting Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, you should know that they’re actually two different towns with just four miles between them and Park Royal Ixtapa can get you closer!

A coconut plantation prior to 1970, Ixtapa today is a first-class tourism destination with world-class hotels, restaurants with the finest cuisine as well as shops. On the other hand, Zihuatanejo has kept its bohemian personality as a modest fishing village attractive to backpackers and made even more alluring by art galleries, local handicrafts and reggae music.

Which ever your prefer, both Ixtapa and Zihuatanejo have kept their relaxed and unhurried spirit making them perfect for all kinds of visitors be it honeymooners, families, friends, adventurers and partygoers who revel in the bars and discotheques into the wee hours.

How to really make your visit to Ixtapa Zihuatanejo count:

    Playas en Ixtapa, Zihuatanejo

    Playas en Ixtapa, Zihuatanejo

    • Start with the beaches, easily accessible by foot:

    Playa Principal
    Playa La Madera
    Playa La Ropa
    Playa Las Gatas
    Playa Contramar

    • Tee off with nature
In the 1970s, the renowned designer Robert Trent Jones Jr. created the Campo de Golf Ixtapa with its 18 holes and nearly four miles of outstretched green space. The course is also a refuge for local nature. Pericos, macaws and even ospreys inhabit the lagoons, trees and jungle areas.

    The Marina Ixtapa Golf Course
Almost four miles of greens and fairways await you at this carefully planned out course by the famed designer Robert Von Hagge. This 18-hole course includes ocean-fed waterways.

    • Fishing
No matter what the season of the year, fishing is excellent in Mexico’s Pacific coastal zone where it’s possible to snag trophy fish weighing more than 100 pounds.

From November to January, it’s golden season. The yellow fin tuna, which weighs up to 330 pounds, can be caught between November and June.

    • All-terrain vehicles

Have a 4×4 adventure as you crisscross the beautiful beaches of Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, including coconut plantations and the jungle. We give this a definite thumbs up.

    • Gastronomy

As in any port, the sea serves up the best ingredients for seafood cuisine and Ixtapa Zihuatanejo is no exception. Beef and pork dishes are also popular among dining fare that includes:

    Aporreadillo

    Aporreadillo

Zihuatanejo-style fish strips, “Aporreadillo” with dried beef, eggs and salsa, tamales, fish tacos “al pastor,” tripe, chopped onion with black beans, and the pork “pozole” Guerrero style, a true delight.

    • Ixtapa Island or Isla Grande

Located just a few miles from the hotel zone, this tranquil island is perfect for snorkeling, enjoying a meal of fresh seafood under a palapa, or playing golf, tennis, surfing and sport fishing. The bird watching is also great, as is the horseback riding.
