    The British Museum

    Founded in 1753, it opened its doors in the Bloomsbury area where the current museum building still stands. It has since then grown and hold over 8 million works. It is dedicated to human history, art and culture and has one of the largest permanent collections that originate from all continents allowing it to vividly illustrate human history. It is home to precious items such as the Rosetta Stone, the Parthenon sculptures and Egyptian mummies, where more than six million visitors yearly admire them for no cost at all.     The Victoria and Albert Museum

    This museum is recognized around the world as the greatest in decorative art and design due to its diversity and scope. The V&A (as it is abbreviated) was established in 1852 and was named after Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and is located in an area known as “Albertopolis” because of its association to Prince Albert.     Musée du Louvre

    This is one of the largest museums in the world and most visitors say one day is not enough. It receives more than 9.26 million visitors a year, making it the most visited in the world. The museum, which was originally a fortress, was inaugurated in 1793. It holds paintings, drawings and prints that have been collected through history. It has 8 departments that you can visit: Egyptian antiquities, Near Eastern antiquities, Greek, Etruscan and Roman, Islamic art, Sculpture, Decorative arts, Paintings and finally Prints and drawings. These collections have permanent displays and others that are on loan at different times during the year.

    American Museum of Natural History

    Its 45 permanent exhibition halls, planetarium and library, are located in 27 interconnected buildings. Its collections have over 32 million specimens of plants, humans, animals, minerals, fossils, meteorites and human cultural artifacts, but due the magnitude only a fragment of them are shown at any given moment.

    Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum

    Located in the Upper East Side neighborhood you can visit this museum that in itself is a work of art. It holds an impressive collection of 20th century art that has been acquired over eight decades such as Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, early Modern and contemporary art. They also have special exhibitions that are exhibited throughout the year.

    Borghese Gallery

    Considered one of the best museums in a city full of museums, the Borghese Gallery has part of the Borghese collection of paintings, sculptures and antiquities. It was initiated by the Cardona Scipione Borghese, the nephew of Pope Paul V. It is located on the originally known Villa Borghese Pinciana, but now is the home not only to this gallery, but to the Villa Borghese gardens.
