Any vacation in Cancun can and should be enjoyed fully without much worry over sargassum.
In certain seasons, sargassum has grown out of control along some of the coasts of the Mexican Caribbean. Some beaches have been affected, even blighted, by the growth of the seaweed. Although the exact cause is not well-understood, some scientists assume it’s related to climate change.
The sargassum will often increase in weight and size as environmental conditions make its reproduction more and more fruitful.
Some of the beaches along the coast of the Riviera Maya are struggling to keep up with the accumulated sargassum and local authorities have been charged with removing it. Local farmers have even been using it as fertilizer.
Cancun has largely been free of the growth and proliferation of the seaweed.
Both the Park Royal Cancunand the Grand Park Royal Cancun resorts are unaffected, and the sea and the beaches are just as pristine and beautiful as you’re likely to remember them.
1. The Park Royal Cancun
The experience of the Park Royal Cancun is always unforgettable. The new Ekinox Sky Lounge just means that more guests than ever get access to stunning sunsets from on high above the entire resort.
An All-Inclusive plan means all guests get unlimited meals and drinks, plus specialty dishes at Italian, Mexican, and seafood restaurants plus the international buffet and all-day refreshments.
To learn more about the local Mayan culture, the nearby Maya Museum offers a wealth of information on what can be seen and experienced in the area’s multiple archaeological zones.
The area’s truly majestic beaches are complemented further by the nature reserves like Rio Secreto and the Nichupté Lagoon, home to dozens of species.
The mysterious sculptures at the Underwater Museum of Art also make a spectacular day trip into and under the sea.
2. The Grand Park Royal Cancun
In the same area of Cancun’s world-famous resort district, Royal Holiday guests can up the ante at the Grand Park RoyalCancun. For a more luxurious stay, nearly endless options for dining, and a chance to lose yourself in a higher level of service and accommodation, there’s nothing quite like it.
The resort beach hasn’t been affected by sargassum, and it’s a truly remarkable stretch of sand. Palates are delighted at four specialty restaurants and the international buffet is the true heart of the resort with constant attention lavished by a team of rather proud chefs. Cocktails are served poolside, and this year, tykes take to the all-new Kids Club so that parents get a break.
Cancun is always more than a beach, and guests headed as far away as Chichen Itza to tour the pyramids, or closer to home at Xcaret ecological theme park. The cenotes provide an equally mysterious entry between worlds and the yachts take to the turquoise sea so that guests can snorkel above the reefs.
There’s still nowhere else like it and the Caribbean at Cancun will be happy to see you back.
