Out of the 17 Spanish resorts at which Royal Holiday members can book accommodations using their membership credits, five are located on the Canary Islands. The islands, of which there are six, offer a host of activities to visitors, such as relaxing days on gorgeous beaches.
Located off the coast of Africa, the Canary Islands were first settled about 3,000 years ago by the Phoenicians, who were followed onto the islands by the Berbers. Today, more than 2 million people live on the islands, most of whom were Spanish citizens. The islands are governed by Spain, where Spanish is the official language and the Euro is the official currency. They are also famous for their fine weather. Temperatures remain spring-like year-round.
Given the weather, many visitors to the Canary Islands use their time off for beach vacations, and the islands do not disappoint in that regard. The Canaries have more than 500 beaches on more than 1,500 kilometers of coastline. The beaches vary in composition and range from white, red, black, and golden sand to stone and natural pool. Some of them feature gorgeous turquoise water and tall sand dunes while others offer up windswept ocean vistas and cliffs. The beaches and the waters off of them also form a great destination for water sports. Some visitors take advantage of the weather to partake in boating and diving all year long, while others try out surfing in all its variations, including windsurfing and kite surfing.
The islands have more to share with visitors than just their beaches, as well. Travelers can explore the history of the Canaries through avenues ranging from ethnographic and archaeological parks to historic towns, museums, and centers of art. Moreover, the islands regularly host events. Every year, several photography competitions are held on the Canaries, and local festivals and street markets can spice up visits, as well.
