Los Cabos, Baja California Sur

Los Cabos

One of Mexico’s most exclusive destinations

Mexico’s Baja California Sur peninsula is home to two very attractive cities that while close to one another, couldn’t be more different. However, they enjoy one important thing in common: beautiful beaches.

Together, the two cities–San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas—are referred to as Los Cabos and together they attracted 1.8 million visitors in 2015.

The Los Cabos Corridor

The two cities are separated by the Los Cabos Corridor, a stretch of tourist destinations extending nearly 20 miles with a scenic road offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Sea of Cortez, beaches, luxury hotels, and spectacular golf courses.

San Jose del Cabo

Founded in 1730, San Jose del Cabo is the municipal capital of Los Cabos. It was established by the Jesuit missionary Sal Jose del Cabo Añiuti.

San Jose del Cabo’s cobblestone streets, buildings and central square preserve the tranquility of Baja California Sur’s Colonial past. Relax in the cool shade on a park bench as you admire the central square, and be sure to make a reservation for a romantic dinner at a local eatery, followed by some gallery and boutique browsing.

Art Walk

Every November through June, Thursday’s art walk starts at the central square. Sample some of the street food as you marvel at the creativity of local artists. Studios and galleries along Alvaro Obregon street throw open their doors until 9 pm enticing you to visit with hors d’oeuvres and drinks. Enjoy the performance of street musicians as you amble from one studio and gallery to another where you’ll encounter sculpture, paintings and art created by the locals.

Cabo San Lucas

This city is synonymous with endless partying and fun at its bars, discos and glamorous shopping centers. If you prefer to rest and pamper yourself in between, check out its luxurious spas and beach clubs. Athletes have plenty of options, from huge world-class golf courses to surfing beaches and all kinds of water sports.

El Arco

This famous rock formation is the iconic image of Los Cabos and shouldn’t be missed. Located on Playa del Amor, all it takes to get there is to rent a water taxi, a kayak or jet ski. You can admire seals and sea lions resting on the rocks, on the way. As its name implies, the Playa del Amor, or “Love Beach” is ideal for enjoying sunrises and sunsets while in a romantic embrace. Interesting fact: the arch is one of the most photographed corners of Mexico.

Playa Medano

Close to downtown San Lucas, this is the beach for party professionals. You can also go jet skiing, go for a banana ride, or parasail up and down the beach.

Los Cabos is one of the five best fishing destinations worldwide, and boasts the title “Marlin Capital of the World.” This is the place to try your luck at catching black, blue and striped marlin weighing up to 1,000 pounds. The best months to fish are from May to June and from December to January. The Sea of Cortez is home to dorado, roosterfish, shark, snapper, swordfish and yellow fin tuna.
